Taipei

Come join us in Taipei, Taiwan, for a fun-filled week from October 22-28, 2023.

Our pop-ups provide a super casual, budget-friendly opportunity to gather together, connect with other worldschoolers, share your insights, instill new friendships, learn about the local area, and immerse in a friendly, accepting mobile community.

We’ve cherry-picked the best low- or no-cost activities that highlight local nature, arts, history, food, and culture….but you’ll also have plenty of time to relax, get to know each other and even stray from the itinerary to add activities that cater to the group’s interests (we provide plenty of supplemental ideas to tailor your experience).

Pop in for a few days or the full week. Join as many activities as you’d like. It’s up to you! We would love to have you come and simply hang out with like-minded families while we dive in and explore the local offerings.

Our itinerary will include activities such as the following:
*Taipei 101 Views
*Lungshan Temple
*National Taiwan Museum
*Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall
*Taipei Zoo
*Taipei Astronomical Museum
*Huashan 1914 Creative Park
*Da’an Forest Park
*Taipei Children’s Amusement Park
*Guandu Temple & Hongshulin Mangroves
*Maokong Gondola

MEET YOUR COHOSTS MAX & RACHEL:
Hi everyone, my name is Max and I’m excited to be your co-host for the Taipei Pop-Up Hub. My wife and I have two young boys (7 & 5) and have always been avid travelers. We spent 2022 as a nomadic family and although we’re now based in Taipei, we continue to travel as much as possible to learn from other people, places, and cultures. This will be my fourth pop-up hub and I can’t wait to meet you and show you around the awesomeness of our adopted hometown. My older son is very excited as well…he just told me yesterday (unprompted) that he misses the pop-up hubs so much.

Rachel & family sold everything in 2014 and never have looked back. They’ve been completely nomadic since 2018, homeschooling their three children while they travel the globe. Some of their favorite family travel destinations include Turkey, Romania, New Zealand, Spain, and London. Two of their three teens will join the Taipei Pop-Up and will be 14 and 16 years old at the time. This will be their first trip to Taiwan and they’re super excited to reunite with Max & family (our 3rd pop-up together!).

LODGING & NEIGHBORHOODS:
The standard, and very accurate, answer is that there are no bad neighborhoods. From a safety and security standpoint, there’s not much to worry about in Taipei. Occasionally Ximen gets mentioned as an area to avoid living in, but that’s more because it’s louder, noisier, and far more touristy than other neighborhoods. It’s not bad though, especially if you’re a tourist.

The more central you are, the more convenient it is to get around town, but even if you end up further away you still will have all the necessities nearby. We recommend staying anywhere along the MRT blue or red lines between Xinyi District and Ximen District to be well-situated.

Hosts are in the following two areas:
1) The border between the Da’an and Xinyi Districts
2) The area between Wanhua and Ximen Districts

SAFETY INFORMATION
One note about safety: the most dangerous aspect of Taiwanese culture is the traffic accidents. Please be careful when crossing the street. Taipei and Central Taipei drivers seem to be more aware and civilized…but as you get farther away from the center (and especially if you go traveling around the island) be extra cautious. The pedestrian infrastructure gets worse outside of central Taipei and there are many pedestrian deaths every year despite having the right of way.
