SUMMARY:Osaka\, Japan
DESCRIPTION:Explore Osaka\, Japan during cherry blossom season! We have a fun-filled and community-centered worldschool gathering March 30 – April 5\, 2024. \nOur pop-ups provide a super casual\, budget-friendly opportunity to gather\, connect with other worldschoolers\, learn about the local area\, instill new friendships\, share your insights\, and immerse in a friendly\, accepting mobile community. \nWe’ve cherry-picked the best low- or no-cost activities that highlight local nature\, arts\, history\, food\, and culture… but you’ll also have plenty of time to relax\, get to know each other\, and even stray from the itinerary to add activities that cater to the group’s interests (we provide supplemental ideas to tailor your experience). \nPop in for a few days or the full week. Join as many activities as you’d like. It’s up to you! We would love to have you come and simply hang out with like-minded families while we dive in and explore the local offerings. \nOur itinerary will include activities such as the following: \n*Osaka Walking Tour \n*Osaka Castle \n*Tennoji Park & Zoo \n*Ooedo Minoh traditional onsen baths and waterfall hike \n*Todaiji Daibutsuden historic Buddhist temple \n*Tsutenkaku Tower observation deck \n*Street food & markets \n*Tempozan’s 112 meter tall Ferris wheel \n*Big Bang Sakai Children’s Museum and 53m Jungle Gym \n*Osaka Science Museum \nAdd on options include Bampaku Beast amusement park\, World Fair Park\, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan\, Lego Land\, or a day trip to Hiroshima or Kyoto! \nCOST per Family \nUS$100 Early Bird Rate\, expires January 15\, 2024 \nUS$140 Regular Rates (a $25 discount is available for families in need\, use code OSAKA25 at checkout) \nMEET YOUR HOST: \nI’m Tara\, and I’m traveling with my family of four with two kids (son will be 13 and daughter is 11).  My husband and I early retired in 2021\, and we moved from Houston to Spain where we’ve spent the last two years until the end of June 2023. \nMy husband worked in accounting while I was an art educator for the previous 11 years (experience from PreK age through to Seniors in HS). Prior to the classroom\, I worked in museum education and advertising. My passions\, interests\, and experience made the leap to worldschooling right up my alley! One of my favorite places in the world (so far) is NYC. I may be biased since I spent most of my 20s in NYC. I love big cities\, but I also love getting out of my comfort zone and experiencing new things (including smaller places like Granada). \nAfter two years of full immersion in Granada\, Spain\, we are now full-time nomadic travelers / worldschoolers. We currently plan to slow travel for two years and then apply for Spanish visas again (which would put our oldest at ESO 3 age or US High School age). But who knows how our plans may evolve as we travel full-time? \nWe are spending March and April in Japan (with 6 weeks in Osaka).  We chose Osaka because of Cherry Blossom Season\, endless attractions and activities\, and it also offers easy access to Kyoto.  One of my favorite things to do is guide my family through unique adventures and opportunities (and big cities are my jam)… I would love to share this with other families.  We hosted our first Worldschool Pop-Up in Budapest in November 2023\, and we had a blast.  We hope to meet you in Osaka at the end of March / early April 2024. \nLODGING & NEIGHBORHOODS: \nOsaka is a large but safe city. If you use your common sense there are no truly dangerous areas to avoid. However\, our activities are grouped by areas accessible via public transport. \nOur host recommends the following three neighborhoods serviced by the Midosuji subway line: \n(1) Kita Ward (North 北): Around Osaka and Umeda stations. \n(2) Minami (South 南): Around Namba Station. \n(3) Tennoji/Abeno: Around Tennoji and Abeno stations. These are centralized neighborhoods with good transportation access. \nThe host has a rental near Yodogawa Ward. \nTRANSPORT CONSIDERATIONS: \nTransport info here: https://www.osaka.com/info/osaka-metro/ \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION: \nJoin the private Facebook group to ask questions\, stay up to date on activities in the area\, meet the host\, and interact with other potential attendees: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/osakapopup2024

We have a pretty laid-back attitude with travel… sometimes we have a robust plan and other times we don’t. We love to be spontaneous from time to time which has given us lots of unexpected adventures and allowed us to meet and make friends across the globe. It’s these connections that we love most about our worldschooling lifestyle\, there is absolutely nothing better that meeting up with people we’ve met in different locations across the world again and again… which is why we love the pop-up hubs so much as they offer such a great opportunity to do this. \nHost #2 is Sharla\, traveling with her husband and 2 teen boys\, aged 14 and 18. \nSharla and the rest of the Crabtree Family have been traveling together as a family part- or full-time since 2015. Our family of 4\, with 2 teens (14 and 18) has travelled together around the US\, all over Europe\, Morocco\, Central America\, Thailand\, and are super excited to explore more of Southeast Asia this coming year. Our first pop-up was in London in 2022 and we loved it so much\, we’ve since been to one in Madison\, Wisconsin and another in Kuala Lumpur. We are planning on Penang and Siem Reap\, as well! We will be spending a month in Da Nang prior to the pop-up with other worldschool families\, getting to know the area and planning a great itinerary. \n  \nLODGING & NEIGHBORHOODS: \nDa Nang has many great areas and neighborhoods to explore\, from My Khe Beach right on the city’s beautiful coastline to the bustling Da Nang City Center and Dragon Bridge. The city is divided in half by the Han River\, offering a cityside and beachside. The host families are staying between My Khe Beach and the Han River in the An Thuong area. \nThe Da Nang City Centre\, along the Han River waterfront\, is great if you want to be close to everything and enjoy the local life. This area is centrally located and offers easy access to many of the city’s attractions and eateries. \nIf you prefer to stay closer to the beach\, My Khe Beach is located at the city’s northern end and offers stunning views of the sea and the Son Tra peninsula. This area also has plenty of restaurants\, cafes\, and shops. \nThe An Thuong area offers a great position between the beach and the city centre. An Thuong’s streets are lined with an array of eateries\, boutique stores\, and local markets. \nIf you would like to stay a little further outside the hustle and bustle of the city\, Son Tra Peninsula\, often called the «Green Oasis» of Da Nang\, boasts lush greenery\, meandering roads\, panoramic views of the South China Sea\, and secluded beaches. Car rides into the city will take ~20 minutes. \nLuckily\, no matter where you choose to stay in Da Nang city\, nothing is far away. At most\, it’ll be a 15-minute drive from one corner of the city to the other. The airport is only a 10-min drive from the city center. \n  \nTRANSPORT CONSIDERATIONS: \nDa Nang has an efficient public bus system with routes that are clearly labelled in English at each stop and fares that are very cheap. (VND 7\,000-15\,000 per ride) Other handy transport options include: \n\nMetered taxis – Best way to get from point A to B. Ensure drivers use the meter to avoid arguing over fares.\nMotorbike taxis – Popular for shorter trips where buses don’t go. Negotiate the fare before setting off.\nBicycle & motorbike rental – Ideal for exploring beaches and neighbourhoods at your own pace. Rent from hotels or agencies along main streets.\nGrab car & Grab bike – Southeast Asia’s top ride-hailing app offers everything from cars to motorbikes. Download the app and input your destination for door-to-door convenience.\n\n  \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION: \nJoin the private Facebook group to ask questions\, stay up to date on activities in the area\, meet the host\, and interact with other potential attendees: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/danangpopup2024
